About This Community
El Chante is an assisted living and memory care home in Jocotepec, an authentically Mexican town on Lake Chapala. The house was once a convent, and it still carries that quiet, unhurried feeling.
Some rooms have a balcony or a view of the lake, and each can hold a regular bed or a hospital bed depending on what a resident needs. Options range from a private room with its own bathroom to a private room with a shared bathroom or a studio. The shared bathroom is spacious and adapted for residents who are bed-bound or need help bathing and showering.
The home keeps its original chapel, which the residents love. The Mexican Catholic residents visit it, and so do several of the foreign residents who simply enjoy the calm of the space.
Behind the main garden, a gate opens to a second, wilder garden that feels almost like a little woodland, a favorite spot for residents to sit and talk. Beyond it, a short accompanied walk leads out toward the Jocotepec malecón, with its walkway, benches and small park.
Residents get three meals a day plus snacks and dessert, and the kitchen cooks to each person. A resident with diabetes eats what their doctor laid out, a resident who does not eat beef gets chicken versions of the meals made just for them. The home also has experience feeding memory-care who lost their appetite or forgot they already had their meal.
The home has capacity for 20 residents. Residents look comfortable and cheerful, and they light up when the caregivers walk in. Even those who are quite fragile, whether from memory loss or frail health, keep their assisted freedom. If someone wants to rest on the couch, wander the garden with a walker, or head out toward the lake, the caregivers make it happen. Pets are welcome here too, so a resident’s dog or cat can settle in right alongside them.
The sisters who own El Chante run it themselves, with a team of caregivers and cooks, and they stay in close touch with families. Expect regular WhatsApp photos and updates, calls and messages arranged. Families can visit whenever they like, and when there is room, they are welcome to stay a few nights.
There are nurses on staff, a doctor who does monthly checkups and is on call for anything urgent, and the managers who oversee the care for each patient. The space is very well-kept: housekeeping and laundry is done every day, and residents are kept well-groomed.
The name comes from the town of El Chante, where the first home started, but the home has since moved to this former convent in Jocotepec, so it is no longer in El Chante itself. From Ajijic it’s just a few towns west, and from Guadalajara you reach it along the road to Jocotepec. It is farther out than some homes, and that distance is part of the appeal: you are still by Lake Chapala, away from the busier expat pockets, in a real Mexican town.
