Our Story

Hi, we’re Enelin and Alejandra, the people behind RetireMexico.com.

Enelin spent her life chasing the next flight and building things online, until Puerto Vallarta stole her heart in 2021. She started RetireMexico in 2025, the winter her grandmother Ene passed away. Ene spent her whole career as a nurse, caring for strangers, and her whole life caring for the people she loved. When it was finally her turn to be cared for, Enelin found herself wishing there was a better place for her grandmother — a retirement home she actually deserved. Because she deserved so much. That’s not a story that should keep repeating itself, not for her generation and not for the next one.

Alejandra grew up in Puerto Vallarta, where in high school she did her community service at a senior home, organizing movie nights and sitting with residents who were bored and lonely. Years later she became a caregiver herself, for her mother’s closest friend Jim, an American who had lived in Vallarta for decades and had no family left but his cat. Jim refused assisted living and home nursing. His mind was still sharp, he did not want to be anyone’s burden, and the company he wanted was theirs. So Alejandra and her mother learned to arrange his care quietly, in ways that felt like company rather than care.

Why RetireMexico: We came to this through people we loved, and the care they deserved but didn’t get. No one should have to trade real care for their loved one just to stay within budget. In Mexico, that same budget buys genuine luxury and attentive, quality care.

This is for everyone who spent their life showing up for others. It’s time someone showed up for them.

Caregivers Finding Support

If you are caring for a parent, a spouse, a sibling, a grandkid, a best friend, or another loved one, we understand how stressful and unfamiliar this can feel, especially from across a border and in a country you may not know well. Many caregivers end up here unexpectedly, needing to make decisions quickly without a clear starting point.

Our goal is to make that search clearer and more trustworthy so you can make decisions with a clear starting point.

Seniors Seeking Community

For older adults who want community, a safety net and less to worry about. Many homes in Mexico offer both independent and assisted living under one roof, so you can keep your own routine now and add help with daily tasks later without having to move again.

People choose this life for the convenience, the social side, and the peace of mind, often long before they need any hands-on care.

Retirees Planning in Advance

Many retirees begin to think ahead about what happens if their care needs increase over time. Moving from independent living to assisted living, or from assisted living to nursing care, is a transition that is much easier to navigate when you have already done the research and know what options exist in your city.

This site is also for you — whether you are already living in Mexico, or considering moving from abroad.

How We Choose The Homes We List

Every retirement home listed on RetireMexico.com has been contacted directly and verified by our team, and most have been visited in person. We confirm information, including care types offered, staffing, pricing ranges, language capabilities, and accessibility, before a listing goes live.

Availability changes fast, so if you’re interested in a home, message us: we’ll introduce you directly to the home to confirm what’s open, and schedule a tour. The directory stays free because retirement homes pay us a referral fee when a resident we introduced moves in. That fee is covered by the home, never by you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who’s behind Retire Mexico?

Retire Mexico was started by Enelin and Alejandra. Enelin, originally from Estonia, has lived in Puerto Vallarta for many years and built her life there. Alejandra was born and raised in Puerto Vallarta and is now based in Ajijic, on Lake Chapala. Between us, we bring firsthand knowledge of Mexico’s most established retirement communities and a personal connection to the questions families are trying to answer. A small team helps us visit homes, verify details, and keep the directory up to date.

Is Retire Mexico affiliated with any retirement home?

No. We are an independent resource and are not owned by, operated by, or formally affiliated with any senior care home or service. Our goal is to give you honest information, not to steer you toward any particular provider.

How is the site funded?

RetireMexico.com has been self-funded from the start, and the directory stays free because retirement homes pay us a referral fee when a resident we introduced moves in. The fee is covered by the home, never by you. It never changes what you pay, and it never affects which homes we show you or how honestly we describe them.

How do you verify the retirement homes you list?

We vet every retirement home before it goes live on the site. When possible, we visit in person. When we cannot, we conduct virtual tours and speak directly with the people running the facility. We also review publicly available feedback, including Google and Facebook reviews, and speak with residents or their family members. We want our listings to reflect each retirement home actually looks like, not just what they say about themselves.
