RetireMexico.com was founded by two people who each watched someone they loved reach the end without the care they deserved.
Enelin’s grandmother Ene was a nurse. She spent her career caring for thousands of people she’d never met, then cared for her husband through his illness, and when her own turn came, what was available to her fell far short of what she deserved. She passed away in the winter of 2025.
Alejandra grew up watching it too, with a great-aunt whose Alzheimer’s took something else every year. Years later, she and her mother became the primary caregivers for Jim, a close family friend who had retired to Puerto Vallarta decades earlier from the US and outlived all his expat friends there. Cancer, then dementia, and no family left except his cat.
Between the two of us we’ve watched enough of this to know what it costs when families are left to figure it out alone. So we built the resource we wish had existed.
Why We Built This
Finding the right care is only half of it. The other half is finding the right moment. Many people refuse to move because they’re frightened of losing themselves, and in Mexico most retirement communities are built for advanced cases, so for someone still largely independent, walking into one can feel like being placed in childcare. It’s discouraging, and it makes people turn down help they actually need.
What was missing was someone helping families find their way through all of it. So we went to see for ourselves. Home by home, city by city, we toured, asked the uncomfortable questions about pricing and staffing, and built the directory we kept wishing someone would build.

The directory stays free because retirement homes pay us a referral fee when a resident we introduced moves in. That fee is covered by the home, never by you.

We vet every retirement home before it goes live on the site. When possible, we visit in person. When we cannot, we conduct virtual tours and speak directly with the people running the facility. We also review publicly available feedback, including Google and Facebook reviews, and speak with residents or their family members. We want our listings to reflect each retirement home actually looks like, not just what they say about themselves.
