Shila's House

Shila’s House keeps everything personal. The days are built around indoor activities that keep body and mind engaged, the kind of everyday memory care that helps residents hold on to their motor skills and their routines.

The home grew out of one family’s own need to bring Shila, their relative, from assisted living in the United States to nursing care in Mexico. They’ve now adapted the home to make room for more residents, and today it cares for both American and Mexican retirees. Shila’s Home also accepts guests for short respite care and convalescent stays, including recovery after surgery, and offers daytime care for those who are not ready to move in full time.

The people who run it live on site and look after residents themselves, with a little extra help, and their own relative lives here too, which tells you a great deal about the care they give. There is a distinctly Mexican warmth in how the home runs, drawing on the way families here have long cared for their abuelitos under their own roof, with closeness, respect, and patience.

The house sits in the Fraccionamiento Agua Escondida in Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, halfway between Chapala and Guadalajara. It has a quiet advantage for families flying in from abroad, since the Guadalajara international airport is only 20-30 mins by car, much less than the drive from Guadalajara or Ajijic.
